Listed as concert “Concert Band” in the course catalog, Tornado Winds is open to all woodwind and brass players, and the occasional percussionist.
Tornado Winds is a course focusing on the learning of foundational skills required to master a wind instrument. There are also many opportunities for upperclassmen to gain experience on a secondary instrument.
This course is centered on preparation of concert band music, as well as preparation of audition materials for the All Southern California Honor Wind Ensemble and All Southern California Honor Concert Band. The Tornado Winds will participate in band and orchestra festivals, as well as solo and ensemble festivals, and may take trips as necessary.
Students will perform at concerts frequently throughout the school year and will have a “Solo & Ensemble” unit to continue developing both individual and small group preparation and performance skills.
As of the 2025-26 School Year, students enrolled in Tornado Winds will be eligible to take the course for either Arts credit or Career Technical Education credit. As a CTE Pathway, students in Tornado Winds will experience additional aspects of musicianship that will lead them to becoming young professionals in the field of music. Year 2 may be taken for Honors credit. Students will be considered “Pathway Completors” after two years in a required ensemble, and may be eligible for recognition at Graduation.
Performance at HHS graduation is part of the final exam for this class. There are no optional rehearsals or performances. All members must attend all services.
First year members of the HIM program are highly encouraged to participate in this course as their “plus one” requirement for the marching band.
