The Hoover String Orchestra (HSO) provides mature students with the opportunity to perform challenging literature while refining their instrumental music skills. The instructor’s approval is required to join HSO, but all who play a classical string instrument are welcome! We typically perform concert string literature and use the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, and occasionally guitar. Pianists are encouraged to join as an accompaniment to the string ensemble when available.
This ensemble will perform in concerts at Hoover High School, recruitment events, local and regional festivals, and may take trips as necessary. Performance at HHS graduation is the final exam for this class, with other performances counting as a major grade. Practicing is an expectation and a responsibility of each individual student. Having your own string instrument is also highly encouraged, as you will be able to advance more in understanding the tuning tendencies of your own instrument.
As of the 2025-26 School Year, students enrolled in the Hoover String Orchestra will be eligible to take the course for either Arts credit or Career Technical Education credit. As a CTE Pathway, students in the Hoover String Orchestra will experience additional aspects of musicianship that will lead them to becoming young professionals in the field of music. Year 2 may be taken for Honors credit. Students will be considered “Pathway Completors” after two years in a required ensemble, and may be eligible for recognition at Graduation.
First year members of the HIM program that play a string instrument are highly encouraged to participate in this course as their “plus one” requirement for the marching band.
